Happy Martin Luther King Day!
Remember the original spirit of the day, it is to be a day of service. In honor of Dr. King, do something serving others less fortunate or in greater need.
There is a leader in each of us. Ask yourself, if in your silence, perhaps driven by fear, apathy, disengagement, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness or defeat, selfishness, whatever is impeding you from getting involved, ask yourself, am I complicit in the oppression of me, my people or others? Am I in some way responsible for that which brings harm to me or my community? Do I play a role in that which I complain about? In our silence or inaction, we are accepting whatever is our condition or predicament as our "fate", thereby teaching others how to treat us. Be reminded on MLK Day, it is time we teach new lessons and revisit lessons of the past. We are blessed with many blueprints from Garvey to the Panthers. Choose one...
But for the courage and selflessness of Dr. King and so many others, where would we be as a society, not only Black people but all who now enjoy civil rights and freedoms currently under blatant attack and in serious jeopardy in America to include LGBTQ, immigrants, white women, disabled people and all others who stand steadily and firmly on the shoulders of Black America, although often, without thanks, acknowledgment, appreciation or even understanding. Without King and others, where would we be? In our false sense of comfort or feelings of complacency have we become complicit in our own oppression? When/Why did we stop fighting?
How many oppressed people around the world looked to the struggles and gains of Blacks in the US to find strength and strategy to fight for their own freedom or rights of humanity? How many have been inspired to migrate to the US because of the will, determination and success of American civil rights leaders? Black Americans, too, must be reminded that we are a mighty and resilient people. Oh yes, we are...
Dr. King, other civil rights leaders and so many unnamed foot soldiers sacrificed all, putting the pursuit of justice, peace and a beloved community before self, safety and personal gains, ultimately facing the wrath of unprecedented, and seemingly ongoing, anger that cost many their life and/or their freedom. Their acts of bravery, commitment, courage and love of community, must not have been in vain...
Wake Up and Speak Up American people!
ALL of us!
Do something.
Lift your voice!
Get involved...
Happy Birthday and Thank You Dr. King!
