Just Wasn't Gonna' Happen...

The prosecutors in the zimmerman trial threw the case from the moment they empanelled the jury to the end when they were scrambling for suitable charges. There is NO way they expected that a jury composed of 5 White women, from the south no less, who stereotypically are most fearful of young Black men, were ever going to find empathy for Trayvon nor share some maternal bond with his grieving Mother. Fair trial? Fair verdict? Just wasn't gonna' happen...

Moreover, the prosecutor who steered clear of, but who should have argued, racial profiling was not about to do so when daily he defends the ideology of racial profiling. To do so would have put him in a position of vulnerability, that surely would have come back to bite him. His own words would have set precedent and would have been used against him in his defense of racist cops and others in future cases. He was not about to zealously defend the honor of Trayvon at the expense of losing his legal footing in other cases. Just wasn't gonna' happen...

And let us not forget that judge's children DON'T go to prison! zimmerman, the jerk that he is, has a father who IS the good ole' boy network, old, white and male. It was undoubtedly his father's meddling that manipulated this "justice" from beginning to end. His son was not about to go to prison. Just wasn't gonna' happen...

"Post Racial" is a joke! Racism is alive, well and thriving in America and this case is a reflection of such in the mirror in which we don't want to see ourselves. Those women, nor the prosecution, saw Trayvon as a young innocent Black boy. They saw a young Black "gonna' be" thug who if not causing trouble on that night would have caused trouble in the future. They saw not grieving parents but instead parents who, by virtue of their skin color, should have expected such fate for their son. As Black parents, as a Black community, they/we should be immune to the reality of their/our Black sons being shackled and cuffed, landing in prison and certainly lying dead following some senseless crime. What other future did the Martins expect for Trayvon? A bright future with college degree, 2 children, a big house with the white picket fence in our "post racial" society? A pipedream! Just wasn't gonna' happen...

While I am disappointed in the verdict and would like to have seen a fair, just and colorblind outcome, I am not surprised by the verdict. I never thought zimmerman would be convicted, nor did he. Not in this society, not in this racially biased judicial system that dehumanizes young Black men daily as it takes delight in stripping them of their manhood, parading them in courts clad in ridiculously bright orange jumpsuits, pimping them for free labor in prisons filled to the rim with them, returning them to bondage so to keep other folks employed and to make corporations very rich! zimmerman, a racist and a judge's kid, in the very hell hole the system his father served and likely helped to create incarcerated with the men that very system takes delight in condemning? A fair trial for a young Black boy in America, no matter his innocence? Sorry Folks, but it just wasn't gonna' happen...

  1. I hear you Helen....Renewed my boy's passport next month working on Visa's. How long are Black Americans going to wait for justice in this country. Our young black men are dying. So what, they can now ride the buses, live in nice communities, schools are integrated, drive nice cars and play major sports. Oh can't forget now they have a Black President. STILL there is a bounty out on our Young black men.

  2. I agree with you whole-heartedly. I was home and watched 90% of the trial. To me it seem as if the State was saying you (the parents) demanded a trial we're giving you a trial. Am I going to do my best to defend your dead son? No. Am I going to prove that he was the victim in this senseless death? No. Will I a call crediable witnesses? No. Will I put a voice analyst expert on the stand who will prove the voice crying "help" was Trayvon? No. Will I bring court records into evidence showing Zimmerman's prior arrest? No. So in essence the state said I will be present in the courtroom and that's all folks.

  3. Race is still alive, well, and legal in the US! Zimmerman's mother* said that there were burglaries in the area, so he decided to follow Martin. What? Burglary = a walking black man guilty? No other characteristics or description. That's all that's needed to kill a black man, 'black man walking'...

  4. Why did thry spend American dollars putting zimmerman on trial? I was not at all surprised by the verdict! Only those who still have hope in the belief that racism in America does not exist thought maybe, zimmerman would be punished for killing a black child. No way, no how! Believe me,zimmerman will never live in peace. He will forever be haunted by what he did! And I hope his imagination (Black Panther Party)gets the best of him and drives him nuttier!

  6. Helen, thanks for this dialogue.

Racism in America does exist, and no denying it is continued to exist. Unfortunately “Color” was defiantly the initiating factor into what had occurred, but for brief second, can all step back and take the “color” out of the incident and see if we have the same feeling? For brief moment, can we take the “color” out of what are occurring right now in different cities with select few demonstrators attacking strangers and vandals causing havoc on many city streets and merchants? Let’s take the “color” out of color; what can we all do? Racism is here and will be here. My part is to pray for harmony and “work” at making this great country UNITED. Let’s raise our kids “colorless” and to do the right things. I have a hope it will be better in their generation and beyond.

  7. I refuse to watch the media hype this week. I am disgusted by the white boy mentality. My prayers are with your family Trayvon, You will live on in peace and love. GOD has made a place for you at his right side. Mr. Zimmerman, remember you may be the next one on the ground as someone else "stands their ground."

  8. Yes, racism was alive and well in the incident when Trayvon made the remark "there is some crazy ass cracker following me". Zimmerman never brought up Trayvon's race when he called 911 to report a suspicious person. He never identified the person by race until the dispatcher asked him to do so. The facts of this case were initially investigated and it was determined there was insufficient evidence to bring charges against Zimmerman. It was only after intervention by "black leaders"....ie Al Sharpton, that Zimmerman was indicted. This was a tragic encounter that resulted in the death of one young man and the devastation of the life of another. Yes, race played a big part here...had Trayvon been white and Zimmerman had been black there would have been nobody protesting anything or "seeking justice". Had Mr. Sharpton and the other "leaders" directed 1/2 as much effort toward the black on black murders of the young black men in Chicago, hundreds or thousands of lives could have been saved in the 18 months since Trayvon's death.

  9. WOW! Miss Higgi once again has penned a piece that is true, accurate, and exact. She has stated her perspective on this nightmare with precision. Like a funeral, the george zimmerman verdict serves as a wake up call, a moment of reflection, and a time for positive action. We don't need sermons, marches, or rhetoric. We need to organize, register to vote, fight against the stand your ground foolishness and address the matter of voter suppression.

    Thanks again Miss Higgi.

  10. Still having great discomfort over this injustice. Appreciate your words very much which echo my 24 year old grandson's contant dialogue about his life in America. I agree with others who highlight the need to addresss this at the ballot box. Thank you my friend On Point! Jackie L
